Writing Samples

This page contains writing samples from across different media. Each has a short description about the content, the inspirations behind it, and a link to download the material.

Sci-Fi Narrative Design Test

The link contains a PDF for a narrative design test I did for a well known indie studio. The test contains a number of different tasks, from character writing, to in-game item description. I received excellent feedback on this test, with praise given for my innovative approach to the tasks, and the detail and brevity of my writing.

My main focus was on creating writing that felt rich and interesting, whilst still being concise and easily digestible for the player. I drew on inspirations from across science fiction, of which I am a huge fan, showcasing my ability to engage with the main tenents of a specific genre.

Quest. Sleep. Repeat.

A short film script about World of Warcraft Classic. The story follows Hero, an unassuming orc who starts to become self-aware as they realise they're stuck in an endless cycle of repetition and nostalgia.

I was inspired to write this sceenplay as a former player of World of Warcraft who became very interested in the cycle of re-releasing old expansions of the game. It is comedic in tone, drawing upon the absurdist elements of a character in a video game becoming self-aware, whilst trying to engage with a wider discussion about what nostalgia means for the consumption of any media.

A Gnome's Tale

A homebrew oneshot adventure for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. It features original rules and mechanics to improve combat, as well as an all new subclass - The Bardic College of Transience. There is also a full design exploring the disappearance of Finneus Fizzlebart, and the legend of a God who fell in love with a mortal.

As an avid D&D and general TTRPG player, I've always enjoyed creating my own homebrew content. With this module in particular, I was focused on creating something that felt both gothic and romantic, that tugged on the player's heartstrings as well as delivering exciting gameplay. The themes of life and death permeate throughout, with the new Bard subclass focusing on building a character that works at the boundary between the two.

Flow

A short story about a young woman with ADHD coming to terms with the death of her friend. This story was written for and published in a collection of work exploring neurodiversity. I used my own experiences of gaming, ADHD, and the idea of flow state as the inspiration points, weaving them into a narrative about how games can bring people together.

The story is written in the first-person, and is a bittersweet coming-of-age type tale, focusing particularly on how ADHD can be misunderstood and misread.
